The Election Commission has postponed to July 9 the hearing in a complaint concerning “paid news”, allegedly involving Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.
The hearing, which was earlier scheduled for Friday, has been deferred following a request from Mr. Chavan, EC sources said on Thursday.
The sources said Mr. Chavan could himself appear or send his lawyer.
The Commission had served a notice to the Chief Minister on allegations of placing advertisements that were passed off as news items during the Assembly polls last year.
EC had also sent to Mr. Chavan copies of allegations including several CDs and press clippings that the Bharatiya Janata Party had given in its complaint to the Commission. The BJP had alleged that Mr. Chavan had overspent in his election campaign and misrepresented facts about the expenses.
