Demonstrators target North Block, South Block & Supreme Court; some attempt to enter Rashtrapati Bhavan
The simmering public anger against the gang-rape of a 23-year-old paramedical student in a moving bus in the city spilled over to institutions of the highest echelons of the government on Friday as protesters targeted North Block, South Block, Rail Bhavan and Supreme Court, with some even attempting to enter Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Several activists of the Aam Aadmi Party, including Arvind Kejriwal, staged a protest near 10 Janpath, the residence of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, demanding speedy justice to the victim. The activists, who marched to Ms. Gandhi’s residence after staging a demonstration at Jantar Mantar, sat there holding candles and shouting slogans against the government.
A large number of protesters under the banner of the All India Democratic Women’s Association, the Young Women’s Christian Association and the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union marched from Rajpath and crossed the barricades at the entrance to Raisina Hill. The protesters, who raised slogans “We want justice” and seeking stringent punishment for the culprits, were stopped by the police when they tried to force their way into Rashtrapati Bhavan.
“They say we need permission to enter there. Why do we need permission? Nobody takes any permission while attacking and harassing women. We are here to express our anger, hurt and outrage at the situation where women are forced to fend for themselves,” said a protester flashing a placard that read: “Don’t go out late at night. Explain ‘late’ please”, and “Don’t tell your daughter not to go out, tell your son to behave properly.”
The protests, which saw spontaneous participation by both men and women from different age groups and walks of life, demanded not just a comprehensive law to deal with rape but a radical change in the attitude of those in law and order agencies who put the onus of the shame on the victims instead.
While protesting at Jantar Mantar, Mr. Kejriwal demanded that a law, making completion of trial of all rape cases within two months mandatory, be passed immediately. Referring to the rape of a German tourist in Jodhpur in 2006, he said the judge completed the trial within 16 days. “If the Jodhpur judge can do this in 16 days, why can’t that be adopted by the entire judiciary as the practice for rape cases?” he asked.
Some people also protested outside the Safdarjung Hospital.

Our Laws (with due respect to all) are based on outdated legislation
which were enacted by the british in and around 1888 which ensured
that they along with their henchmen (the Police) ruled the public with
an iron-hand..
Our Legislators haven’t done enough for the last 60 years to change
that. ??
Taking serious note of the gruesome incidence of a medical student in
a moving bus at Delhi, the Parliament's Standing Committee on Home
Affairs is conducting a meeting on December 27, where the security
situation in the country, and Delhi in particular will be discussed.
The meeting would deliberate on issues concerning such incidents, the
changes, if any, to be made to the statute, setting up of fast track
courts and amendments to be made to the C.P.C. and the Evidence
Acts and to conduct such trials in-camera . Also, there is an opinion
that extreme punishment should be awarded to the convicts, . The views
of the officials and their suggestions shall be made to the
government. under the committee's Hon`ble Minister and chairman Shri
M Venkaiah Naidu . The eleventh biennial conference of All India
Lawyers Union (AILU, an august body) is also scheduled to be held
during December 27-29, 2012 in New Delhi. We often wonder whether we
can do something to make our country safe for our future generation.
?? . Yes !! we can. Start by sending positive, practical and legal
suggestions to the chairman of the Parliamentary
Committee (no emotional outbursts please and no foul language) VIA
mvnaidu @ sansad.nic.in ) OR AND urge the Authorities to
invite this’ august” body of AILU also to its meeting, or at least
to invite suggestions and recommendations from them and the public AND
urge the chairman to inform us regarding the date their report with
their recommendations will be tabled in the Parliament and also seek
his permission to congregate outside the House on that day and not to
allow the law makers to leave the House till they have enacted new
laws or amended the present laws to give effect to the recommendations
of the Parliamentary Committee. Please request the media to live-
telecast this meeting, so that the whole country becomes aware as to
the seriousness of the government in addressing these issues.
. May we wake up to a new Era in 2013 !!
It was such a horrendous crime that took place outraging the modesty of a 23 year old girl who is fighting her way to living. Our Country clearly boasts of Democracy and people sitting in the helm of Affairs are bound to help the persons in utter distress. Instead they choose to turn a deaf ear to all the agonies and cries of the humanity and are interested only in personal glory. How many rape cases have been brought to book. The Law and Order situation in the country on the whole has been rendered into shambles. And what security does a commoner expect to receive. In the instant case, the Police Administration has been totally ineffective. Where prevention is better than cure, the Police should have undertaken measures to ensure that the crime initially did not take place.
The Honourable Apex Court should redefine Rape Laws based on the gravity of the crime. The extreme caes/s should be visited with Capital punishment, not merely sentencing to Death but torture to death.
law and Justice needs to be storng, its a need to develop a fear in the heart n mind of people that if they commit any crime they will be strictly punished, now a days there is no fear in the minds of people as our law and justice is not storng.
where are our MP's and MLA who are people representative. They should come forward and show their humanitarian side and raise the point in people's house.i.e Lok Sabha about the safety of women not only in Delhi but all other places in India.
Now each and every citizens except the persons with criminal tendency
will confirms that a strict action to be taken. By a simple procedure of
ordinance government can frame a law and then take it to next parliament
session. High penalty and punishment and immediate disposal of case by
setting up special courts is a must. Government and High Courts or
Supreme Courts have to act immediately as General Public, Aam Admi can
only protest (at their maximum spirit)
Arvind Kejriwal is right in demanding disposal of rape cases in a fortnight and a strong deterrent. The awareness of generally lethargic Delhites to assert their rights is bound to transform Delhi for better.
Rightly stated: tell your boys to behave appropriately! It is ridiculous
and that girl and in fact all girls deserve much better than this. I am
impatiently waiting for the day that a minority of men learn that it
could be their mother or sister or daughter someday, so think twice
before you even THINK of touching someone wrongly!
Let us all make this solemn and sincere pledge this day that we shall not remain mere mute spectators whenever the modesty of any lady is at stake, but shall spring to the help of the victim and confront the offender/ offenders with words and deeds to prevent the offence and shall handover the culprit/culprits to the lawenforcing authorities.
