Our paths are different, but goal is the same: Anna

September 21, 2012 12:48 am | Updated 12:48 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A day after Team Anna split, social activist Anna Hazare said the paths of the two groups were different but their goal was the same — to fight corruption and strive for a strong and independent Lokpal.

“The movement has separated, with one [group] going the political way. But both these routes are important,” Mr. Hazare said in a video message on twitter which was re-tweeted by his supporters.

India Against Corruption member Arvind Kejriwal expressed “shock” at Mr. Hazare forbidding his group from using his photo or name in its campaign material and said the veteran activist would always be a “respected guru.”

“Anna's photograph and name are printed in our hearts. We will continue to take his blessings and touch his feet. Anna’s principles will become the foundation for our party,” Mr. Kejriwal said.

Neither side relented from its position, but each tried to soften the blow by saying it had agreed to disagree. Both groups had lengthy meetings with activists and citizens to strengthen their positions.

Among those Mr. Hazare met was his associate Kiran Bedi, who has always opposed conversion of the movement into a political party. She said those with the “andolan” would tour the country and strengthen the anti-corruption movement for a strong Lokpal. “We are looking at a decentralised movement with Jan Lokpal as the key focus.”
