Yet another blockade in Manipur

Within four days of lifting the crippling indefinite economic blockade of Manipur, two tribal organisations have imposed another blockade. The blockade was imposed at Tamenglong district along National Highway 37 which connects Imphal with Silchar by a 222 km-long mountain road with effect from Friday night.

A statement issued by the Kuki Women Organisation said for a long time it has been urging the Manipur government not to keep the “tribal areas” within the Jiribam sub-division Imphal east district adjacent to Silchar.

There have been positive developments for upgrading the sub-division to a revenue district. It further said the “tribal areas” should not be included in the proposed district.

The Committee On the Protection of Tribal Areas of Manipur is also imposing a blockade with effect from Monday midnight.
