An inmate of Yeravada central jail died of swine flu on Friday, taking the toll to 61 in the city, worst hit by the deadly virus.

Prisoner Maruti Zargad (60), lodged in the jail since June this year on charges of murder, was taken to government Sassoon hospital a few days back for swine flu treatment but he succumbed to the deadly H1N1 virus last night, jail authorities said.

A thorough check was carried out on more than 40 jail inmates in the barrack where the deceased was lodged, Deputy Inspector General of prisons (Western region) Ravindra Kedari told PTI.

All inmates will be screened for the second time on Friday by a team of Sassoon hospital doctors for any possible symptoms of the virus, he added.

The sprawling jail premises houses around 2000 prisoners, who are also involved in a variety of industrial activity carried out during their stay under the supervision of the prison administration.
