Woman student charged under UAPA

A woman student of Jadavpur University, arrested by the Special Task Force of the Kolkata Police allegedly for being involved in Maoist activities, was remanded in police custody for 14 days by the city court here on Saturday.

Joyeeta Das has been charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act along with other charges of waging war against the State and criminal conspiracy.

According to the police, she is a member of the Kolkata City Committee of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) and was arrested late on Friday. “Some incriminating documents” were seized from her possession.

She was arrested from the Charu Market police station area in the city.

Members of civil society protested outside the court premises when Ms. Das was produced there.
