A 25-year-old woman was seriously injured when she jumped off a running train to escape sexual assault in Howrah district of West Bengal on Sunday. The woman, a resident of Asansol in Bardhaman district, sustained injuries in the head and hand. She was admitted to a private hospital in the city. The victim who works here in a reputed IT firm boarded the Howrah- bound Delhi-Howrah Janata Express from Asansol in the afternoon.

At Bandel station in the State’s Hooghly district other passengers travelling in the ladies compartment got down. She was left alone in the coach when a man got in and snatched her mobile phone. Then he allegedly molested her. She cried for help in the moving train and finally jumped out.

“We have registered a complaint of theft and molestation,” Superintendent of Railway Police, Howrah Milan Kanta Das told The Hindu over telephone. “Though she had sustained injuries her condition is stable,” he added.
