A 32-year-old woman was run over and killed by an express train after being “pushed” by a Travel Ticket Examiner (TTE) at the Jalgaon railway station, some 400 kilometres from Mumbai, the police said.

According to the police, the victim identified as Ujwala Pandey (32) had booked general compartment tickets on the Mumbai-Rajendranagar Patna Express train to travel from Jalgaon to Khandwa. On Thursday morning Mrs. Pande, travelling along with her two daughters, aged seven and 14, was unable get inside the general compartment and fearing she would miss her train managed to board the third AC coach of the train along with two daughters.

While her daughters managed to get inside the compartment, the woman tried stepping on the footboard but was allegedly pushed by the TTE Sampath Salunkhe (57). The lady fell into the gap between the coach and platform and was run over by the train. Her nephew, Rahul Purohit, who had come to see her off at the station, took her to a local hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

“She was trying to get on the footboard but was pushed by the TTE. She called for help and asked him to pull her inside but he refused and instead pushed her. I saw him pushing my aunt. She fell into the gap and was run over,” Mr. Purohit told reporters.

The furious mob stopped the train and dragged Mr. Salunkhe out of the compartment and assaulted him before handing him over to the police. He was taken into custody. “The TTE was hiding in the pantry and we managed to stop the train and get him out,” Mr. Purohit added.

“Based on the nephew’s complaint we have lodged an FIR and booked him under section 304 of the IPC for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and have taken the TC in our custody. He will be produced in the local court shortly. We are investigating if indeed the lady was pushed by the TTE or she lost her balance and slipped,” Assistant Police Inspector S Pardesi of Jalgaon railway police station told The Hindu .
