Stating that he had been given a huge responsibility, the new Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Ram Naik on Tuesday said that he would act as a bridge between the Centre and the State Government. Even as the Governor said that many schemes have been launched by the Central Government, he made a specific mention of the programme launched to clean the Ganga. Mr. Naik said there are many schemes were assistance would be needed by the State and likewise the Centre would also seek assistance.
As compared to other countries democracy is functioning quite well in India, Mr. Naik said, adding that the Central and State Governments both have responsibilities upon them and he will try to “function as a bridge between the two”.
Mr. Naik, who took over as the 28 Governor of Uttar Pradesh, was addressing a Press conference after assuming charge.
Mr. Naik indicated that some of the decisions taken by the former Governor, Aziz Qureshi, including according minority status to the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University – U.P. Minister Mohammad Azam Khan’s pet project -- would not be reviewed, if the legislation has been approved within the framework of the Constitution. “It is for the law courts to decide whether the decision was right or wrong,” Mr. Naik said.
The Governor said it would be his resolve to contribute towards making U.P. an “Uttam Pradesh”. He said the State has a rich legacy of political traditions, including giving 10 Prime Ministers to the country, including Narendra Modi. Mr. Naik was administered the oath of office by the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court D.Y. Chandrachud at a ceremony held in the Gandhi Sabhagar of Raj Bhavan.
The function was attended by the Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, his Cabinet colleagues, senior State officials and State Bharatiya Janata Party leaders.
