West Bengal clampdown

January 13, 2011 02:40 am | Updated 02:40 am IST - KOLKATA

The West Bengal government has begun collecting reports on armed camps in the State and is readying itself to initiate action under existing laws.

Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh told reporters at the Secretariat that district police supers had been asked to find out the number and locations of armed camps in their districts.

“If arms are recovered from these camps, action would be taken under the Arms Act, if they are illegal,” he said.

While the issue has been a contentious one, with political parties trading charges against one another, the matter snowballed into a major controversy and came into sharp focus after Friday's killing at Netai village in Lalgarh , when shots were reportedly fired at a crowd of villagers from a Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader's house, killing seven.
