Eighteen-year-old Rishabh was shifted to four hospitals in three days before he succumbed to dengue at the Max Hospital in Vaishali on Thursday.

With this, the death toll due to dengue in the city has gone up to 17, while the number of people who tested positive for the disease has crossed 2,000.

A Class X student, Rishabh was a resident of New Seemapuri. His father Ram Kishore works as a security guard.

According to the deceased’s uncle, Sulander Pal, Rishabh was rushed to the Red Cross Hospital near Old Seemapuri border after he complained of fever. Tests there revealed that he had contracted dengue.

“Since the hospital had no beds, we took him to Gupta Multispeciality Hospital in Vivek Vihar on September 14. The next day we were told that Rishabh’s condition had taken a turn for the worse and that he needed platelet transfusion. After the transfusion he seemed stable,” said Mr. Pal.

The family said that on September 16, doctors told them that Rishabh needed to be shifted to a bigger medical facility as his condition was deteriorating. According to the family, the authorities themselves contacted the Max Super Speciality Hospital in Patparganj.

According to Max Hospital, the patient was referred to them from another nursing home and was offered treatment immediately. A statement from the hospital said the patient was brought in an advanced cardiac life support ambulance on September 16.

“As Rishabh’s condition worsened, doctors at Max Hospital (Patparganj) told us to shift him to Max Hospital in Vaishali. Rishabh was admitted to the ICU at Max Vaishali on September 16. He died there on Thursday evening,” said Mr. Pal.

The body was later handed over to the family with a significant amount of the fee being waived off on compassionate grounds, a statement from the hospital said.

“We are left with a hefty bill and are confused about what went wrong,” said Ram Kishore.
