The West Bengal government went into a huddle here on Monday to work out its strategy in the wake of the State Election Commission moving the Calcutta High Court on the holding of the rural polls.
“We want elections to be held early and in peaceful and democratic manner,” the State’s Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee told journalists at the State Secretariat.
Mr. Mukherjee who held a series of meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the State’s advocate general Bimal Chatterjee and the Trinamool Congress all-India general secretary Mukul Roy said the government would contest the petition filed by the poll commission.
Pointing out that the State government had consulted the State Election Commission on the holding of the polls and written to it several times on the matter he said the latest letter was written only three days ago. “We have not received a reply of the letter and the Commission has taken the matter to High Court,” Mr. Mukherjee said.
