The West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) chaired by Justice (retd.) Asok Kumar Ganguly has taken suo motu cognisance of molestation of three girl students of a school at Uluberia in Howrah district and directed the police to submit an inquiry report within four weeks.
“Considering the seriousness of the incident the commission headed by Justice Ganguly and member N. Mukherjee took cognisance of media reports relating to the incident. The WBHRC directed the Superintendent of Police, Howrah (Rural) to have a probe done into the matter by a senior police officer,” WBHRC Registrar Rabindranath Samanta told The Hindu on Tuesday.
This is one of the first instances where Justice Ganguly had taken cognisance in connection with a case of sexual assault since the three-judge panel of the Supreme Court looking into charges of sexual harassment against him by a woman law intern held that allegations against him disclose prima facie an act of “unwelcome behaviour”.
Mr. Samanta said that the incident occurred on December 14 and it appeared in certain newspapers the next day.
Serious matter“The WBHRC considered it a serious matter as group of men followed the girls and allegedly molested them. When one of the girls called her brother to rescue her, the accused allegedly assaulted him also,” Mr. Samanta said.
