Narinder Nath Vohra, Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, was on Saturday appointed Governor of the State for a second five-year term.
The first term of Mr. Vohra, 76, was to end on June 25.
“The President of India has been pleased to appoint Narinder Nath Vohra to be the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir for a fresh term on the expiry of his present term,’’ a Rashtrapati Bhavan communiqué said.
Mr. Vohra had served as Union Home Secretary and Defence Secretary. A Punjab cadre IAS officer, he was recalled from retirement to head the PMO as Principal Secretary to Prime Minister I.K. Gujral during 1997-98.
A recipient of Padma Vibushan, Mr. Vohra guided the affairs of the sensitive border State with a balanced approach and by carrying all stakeholders together. He had also headed the National Task Force on Internal Security. In his capacity as Governor, he also heads Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.
