22 reconvert under ‘ghar wapsi’ in Kerala

February 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:32 am IST - KOTTAYAM:

For the fourth time during the past 30 days, ‘ghar wapsi,’ the ceremonial return to the Hindu fold from other religions, mainly Christian, was held in the district on Sunday.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders said 22 persons, including six women, from 11 families were converted to Hinduism at a ceremony at Sreekrishna Swamy Temple, Chozhiakkad, near Panachikkad in the outskirts of the town.

The converts were mainly from Cheramar and Sambava communities who were mostly affiliated to various Pentecostal Churches.

A few were from the Latin Catholic fold, they said.

Those who participated in Sunday’s programme were from Kuzhimattom, Pampady, Changanassery, and Malakunnam areas

“Though they were formally members of these Christian denominations, they were unsatisfied with their faith and had been going to temples occasionally,” said K.P. Prakash, district chief of the Dharma Prasar wing of the VHP.

He said that the programme was organised at short notice and only 22 of a total 80 applicants could arrive for the ‘ghar wapsi’ programme.
