Manipur University on Saturday show caused a teacher accused of obscene SMSs to girl students of the university.

The accused — physical education and Sports teacher Shantikumar Yengkhom — would be given a chance to present his case on Monday and if his explanation is found unsatisfactory, a formal order terminating his services would be issued, sources said.

Mr. Yengkhom, it is learnt, initially appeared to take interest in the girls’ welfare but allegedly started sending lewd texts four months ago.

The girls kept quiet at first. But once they came to know that all of them were getting the SMSs, they, along with the Manipur University Students’ Union Revival Demand Committee, took out a rally demanding that Mr. Yengkhom be sacked. The girls told Vice-Chancellor Nanda Kumar Sharma that they would intensify their agitation if the demand was not met.

Mr. Yengkhom could not be reached for comment.
