Suspended IPS officer D.G. Vanzara, who is lodged in the Sabarmati Central Jail in connection with fake encounter cases, retired on Saturday.

Mr Vanzara is an accused in the killing of Ishrat Jahan, Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Tulsiram Prajapati and Sadiq Jamal Mehtar in fake encounters.

Following tradition, the State police have organised a farewell function for him on Sunday evening, which he will not be able to attend.

“He cannot participate since he is an under-trial. In his place, we have invited his family. It is a tradition in the Gujarat Police to give a farewell to the family of a senior officer of and above the rank of Dy.SP [Deputy Superintendent of Police],” Director-General of Police P.C. Thakur told The Hindu .
