UP hooch tragedy toll mounts to 31, many critical

The toll in the hooch tragedy in Lucknow and Unnao districts on Tuesday climbed to 31 with 17 more people dying overnight in various hospitals here.

Over 100 persons were still undergoing treatment in different hospitals in the state capital.

“Till now 25 deaths have been reported from Lucknow and six from Unnao,” IG (Law and Order) A. Satish Ganesh said.

He said that cases have been lodged in Malihabad, Hasanganj, Aurus and two persons have been detained.

Calling for action, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that state government should thoroughly probe the deaths and initiate strict action against those found guilty.

“The state government should thoroughly probe deaths due to spurious liquor and initiate strict action against those found guilty,” Mr. Singh told reporters.

The hooch tragedy occurred in Kharta and other villages in Malihabad area of Lucknow and Talasarai village in Hasanganj area of Unnao district on Monday.
