Reprimanding Varun Gandhi for praising Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s development work in Amethi, BJP leader Maneka Gandhi on Thursday said her son’s comments were “not correct.”

She suggested that he use his head, not heart, while making statements.

Ms. Gandhi said Amethi had not witnessed any development in the last 45 years, and advised Mr. Varun Gandhi to check the situation on the ground before making such comments. “I have gone to Amethi, and there is no development there. Nobody should comment on something unless you have seen it with your own eyes. Some people might have told him that good work has been done in Amethi, so he said it,” she told reporters in Pilibhit, where she is contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

Mr. Varun Gandhi, BJP general secretary, was caught on video on Tuesday, telling a group of teachers at Sultanpur, from where he is contesting, that Mr. Rahul Gandhi had done good work for empowerment of women through self-help groups in Amethi.
