There was uproar in the West Bengal Assembly for the third consecutive day on Wednesday over the attack on septuagenarian leader of All India Forward Bloc, Naren Dey. Left Front legislators sought a statement from the State government.
Later, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Partha Chatterjee told the House: “The administration will do all that it takes to bring the culprits to book, whoever they are. We also pray for the early recovery of the former Minister.”
He said that the person who had lodged a first information report regarding the attack did so on the day after the incident and had stated that he did not recollect who had assaulted Mr. Dey, Mr. Chatterjee said.
The issue was first raised on the day by Leader of the Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra during the period earmarked for mention cases. The State-run hospital in Hooghly district where he was admitted following the attack on Sunday had discharged Mr. Dey against his wishes, he pointed out.
Dr. Mishra of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) held up the discharge certificate of the hospital that stated that the AIFB leader had no bone injury. Members of the Left Front rose from their seats, held up posters with the photograph of the leader attacked and condemned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. They descended to the well of the House and shouted slogans.
Speaker Biman Banerjee reiterated that he could ot force any Minister to make any statement in the House.
Speaking to journalists later in the Assembly premises, Dr. Mishra demanded that action should be taken against the hospital authorities who had deliberately issued such a discharge certificate so that the injury of Mr. Dey could not be considered “grave.”
Mr. Dey had suffered a fracture in his hand and injuries in the eye resulting in inflammation of iris, he said.
“We have a seen a similar situation in connection with the attacks on Gouranga Chatterjee and Abdur Razzak Mollah, both MLAs of the CPI(M),” Dr. Mishra said.
