With the New Delhi gang-rape causing a nationwide uproar, the Akhilesh Yadav government will soon hold a meeting to thrash out measures for preventing the heinous crime in Uttar Pradesh.
A senior official said on Monday that strict action had been taken against rape accused, including booking them under the National Security Act.
ADG (Law and Order) Arun Kumar said that since March 16, 2012 (when the present government was formed), 39 cases of rape and murder of minor girls had been reported in different parts of the State, but a majority of them had been solved. In eight such cases in Saharanpur, Moradabad, Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Jhansi and Barabanki, the NSA was invoked against the arrested accused.
In the recent rape of a minor in Sitapur district, Mr. Kumar said, one person was arrested on Monday night and another was likely to be nabbed soon.
Following the Delhi gang-rape and subsequent public protests, a circular was issued to district police chiefs on how to handle similar gatherings, particularly by girl students. “The SPs have also been instructed to ensure that no protests are held near places where security is at the maximum,” Mr. Kumar said.
