Girl and her friend were under the influence of liquor, say police
The dark side of the Uttar Pradesh police came to the fore again after a girl, in her twenties, being reportedly slapped by a cop in Sahibabad police station in Ghaziabad district during a fracas over the girl and her friend’s detention late on Monday.
Police said the girl and her friend were under the influence of liquor and created unruly scenes in the station.
Despite TV grabs showing the girl being slapped by a policeman, no action has been taken against the errant cop as the investigating agencies will first see the entire video footage before coming to a conclusion.
Meanwhile, the State government has ordered a probe into the incident.
The State IG (STF and Crime), Ashish Gupta, said media channels have been asked to provide the entire video footage of the incident.
Mr. Gupta said the video would be seen in its full context and action would follow if anybody was found guilty.
Mr. Gupta said a boy, aged 25 years, and a girl, 24, were apprehended by members of the public at around 9 p.m. at Shalimar Garden in Sahibabad for indulging in obscene behaviour.
They were asked by the public not to indulge in obscenity. Some members of the public wanted to thrash the couple, but following police intervention they were brought to the police station, the IG (Crime) said. A case under Sections 160 and 294 was filed against them by a member of the public, Mr. Gupta added.
The girl and her friend were granted bail, the U.P. police officer said.
