U.P. constables supplied ammunition to criminals

The involvement of policemen in criminal activities came to light with the arrest of two constables for supplying prohibited cartridges to dreaded criminals and mafia in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The two cops, along with an accomplice who was the driver of alleged mafia don Uday Bhan Singh alias Doctor, were arrested by the Special Task Force in Fatehgarh on Tuesday night. Mr. Singh, a former MLA, is lodged in Fatehgarh Central Jail.

According to an STF spokesman, constable Rajnish Kumar Pandey was posted in Aligarh district and constable Anuj Kumar Verma in Fatehgarh district. The third person is Prashant Mishra. They were arrested from Bholepur crossing in Fatehgarh along with the consignment of 120 cartridges of .38 bore, 29 cartridges of .303 bore with five charger clips, Rs. 60,000 in cash and four mobile phones with sim cards.

Interrogation of the accused revealed that 9 mm cartridge fetched Rs. 450 per piece, and a .38 bore from Rs. 150 to Rs. 200. Mr. Pandey told the police that he was posted in Aligarh district since 2012 and was in touch with about 10 armourers, some of whom were either suspended or dismissed from service. They used to supply the prohibited bore cartridges which were sold to the criminals.

Mr. Pandey had twice sold the cartridges to Mr. Verma who he used to accompany Subhash Singh and Uday Bhan Singh, both incarcerated in Fatehgarh Central Jail.
