The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) on Saturday said it would make public its stand on peace talks and appealed to the people of Assam not to be misled by “rumours” of the militant outfit sitting for a dialogue with the Union government. The outfit would issue a statement in this regard later.

“Rumours”

In an e-mail statement, ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa said, “Rumours have been spread among the people of Assam about negotiations between the United Liberation Front of Asom and the Government of India. We appeal to all sections of the people of Assam not to be misled by such rumours till we formally issue a statement on our position regarding negotiations.”The statement came in the wake of media reports that following the arrest of the outfit’s self-styled Foreign Secretary Sashadhar Choudhury and Finance Secretary Chitraban Hazairka, the oufit was preparing the ground for peace talks with the government.

The two top leaders were believed to have been arrested by security agencies in Dhaka on November 1, and later handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF).

Police custody

The Assam Police took them into custody from the BSF and produced the duo before the Chief Judicial Magistrate here, who remanded them to 10 days police custody.
