The UK is keen to explore investment opportunities in Meghalaya in various sectors like education, tourism and horticulture, a British diplomat said.

“My visit to Meghalaya is part of a fact-finding mission about the potential of the state, which in turn, I would share with companies from Britain who are keen to invest to develop various sectors,” British Deputy High Commissioner for Eastern India Sanjay Mark Wadvani said after arriving in the city.

He added that he has come here to explore opportunities for cooperation between Meghalaya and the UK to work on various sectors, particularly education.

Chief Minister D D Lapang, who met Mr. Wadvani said the state is keen to get potential investors from the UK.

“We had a brief discussion on certain areas especially on the potential of the state in fields of tourism and horticulture. We have a great variety of flowers and orchids, which will be in huge demand in the international market,” Mr. Lapang told reporters.

He said the British Diplomat had raised concerns about the insurgency problem in the region.

“I told him that Meghalaya is one of the peaceful states where the problem of insurgency is not very serious and is now on the wean,” he said.
