Tripura has been ashamed by yet another gang rape incident. Police arrested one of four culprits on Saturday over complaints of rape of two tribal girls in south Tripura.

The victims aged 13 and 14 were raped at different locations after their kidnapping from respective homes at Birchandranagar under Satirbazar police station limit on the night of June 4. The injured girls returned home on the night of June 6 only to narrate the nightmare they experienced during captivity.

“We have arrested one rapist and search is on for rest three. We have acted on basis of complaints received first from the families and then from the girls”, Investigating Officer Krishnadhan Sarkar said over phone.

Police secured three day remand of Swapan Das, 28, from a court, after his arrest on Saturday morning. The girls named him and two tribal youths Ramendra Reang and Sanjit Jamatia, and the fourth rapist who believed to be state government employee remained unidentified.

“Gang rape of the girls was confirmed in medical tests. They recorded statements under IPC Section 164 in a local court on Saturday”, Mr Sarkar informed adding case was registered against the culprits under recently amended IPC Section 376 (D) and other stringent acts.

During captivity the girls were tortured, tied with ropes and their body parts burnt. They somehow managed to flee and saved their life.

Earlier incident of gang rape of two tribal girls in south Triprua before the February 14 assembly elections snowballed into a major political issue. Police failed to arrest the mastermind in that rape incident.

Incidents of all sort of crime, mainly rape, are recurrently occurring against women in Tripura. The national crime record bureau in its last annual report listed the incidents.

Triprua Commission for Women has expressed serious concern over latest complaint of gang rape of two tribal girls. The commission is sending a fact finding team to the incident spot.
