Two policemen were killed as militants carried out twin attacks in Kashmir valley on Thursday. Two civilians, including a woman, suffered bullet wounds in two separate incidents.

A policeman associated with the Special Operations Group, engaged in the counter-insurgency operations, was shot dead on Thursday afternoon by militants in south Kashmir’s Kulgam.

The victim, identified as Shabir Ahmad Dar, was home on a vacation and was working in his fields in Bogund area when the militants reached there. Around five bullets were fired at the policeman. “He dies before he could be shifted to the hospital. He had suffered multiple injuries in the attack,” said a police official.

On May 10, local Army officer Lieutenant Ummar Fayyaz was killed by militants in the same area.

Later in the evening, militants attacked a police party in Srinagar’s busy Hyderpora area. A police official told The Hindu that one policeman, indentified as Shahzad Ahmad, was killed and another injured in the attack.

In nearby Rangreth area, one youth, identified as Nazeer Ahmad, a resident of Bandipora, was hit by bullets when a Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)) patrol, which came under stone pelting, opened fire at “protesters”. The hospital sources said the youth was hit in the chest and his condition “continues to be critical”.

In south Kashmir, unknown gunmen opened fire and injured Suraya, a resident of Kulgam’s Kutrasoo area.
