Two nabbed over death of Meerut youth

May 15, 2014 02:26 am | Updated November 16, 2021 06:54 pm IST - MEERUT:

Police on Wednesday arrested two persons for having allegedly fired the fatal shots at Shubham Rastogi, a young bystander, during the communal clashes here last Saturday. Bilal, a resident of Gudri Bazar — the epicentre of Saturday’s violence, and Bhura, a resident of the nearby Delhi Gate /Clock Tower area were arrested..

Bilal has no criminal record while Bhura is wanted in 35 cases of looting and murder across Meerut, Ghaziabad and Noida, the Deputy Inspector General of Police K. Satyanarayana said on Wednesday.

“The duo was not able to give any reason or motive for firing at Shubham. Bilal says that he fired because a mob of about 1,000 each from both communities was pelting stones and also firing occasionally and he fired aimlessly in the commotion… it is this dangerous communal feeling that takes over certain elements that is dangerous,” Mr. Satyanarayana said.

“In all, eight persons from the Muslim community had been arrested till late on Tuesday and we hope to catch the miscreants amongst Hindus also soon,” the DIG said.

“We will nab all sthose seen in photographs caught by the police handicams, CCTV and those that appeared in the newspapers holding some object in their hands,” the DIG added.
