Two killed in Haridwar rain

July 19, 2010 08:27 pm | Updated 08:27 pm IST - DEHRA DUN:

At least two persons, a woman and her four-year-old son, went missing after flash flood waters entered houses in over a dozen localities of Haridwar during heavy rain on Sunday night. Water was being pumped out in several areas on Monday and the administration has closed all educational institutions till Wednesday.

The unprecedented flood-like situation in residential areas was being attributed to the unscientific construction activity all over Hardwar city for the Maha Kumbh earlier this year. The worst-hit areas were near the hill bye-pass road where huge amounts of silt came along with the rain water resulting in several vehicles getting stuck.

Meanwhile, rain lashed Dehra Dun on Monday bringing down temperatures to comfortable levels. “The rain will prove good for the crops”, a horticulturist said hoping the showers would continue for some days and recharge the aquifers so that there was no water scarcity in the winters.
