Two police constables — Sourabh Bhakta and Chandraprakash Pande — and a doctor of a government hospital in Bhilai town of Chhattisgarh, Goutam Pandit, were arrested on Thursday for allegedly gang-raping a 20-year-old woman repeatedly for over six months.
Pradeep Gupta, Inspector-General of Police, Durg range, said the victim was found in a “distraught” condition in a temple on Wednesday.
“Local people reported that a woman in a bad condition was found in a temple. Police teams rushed to the spot after which she told them about the assault,” Mr. Gupta told The Hindu .
The victim was first assaulted on June 19, 2014 when she was admitted to the government hospital in Bhilai with jaundice.
“She has alleged that the doctor administered her drugs which made her unconscious. She was then taken to a room on the ground floor of the hospital, where she was sexually assaulted by the constables and the doctor,” Mr. Gupta said.
A PTI report said that after she was discharged from the hospital, the constables allegedly started harassing her and sexually exploited her. The girl did not report the incident to the police as the accused allegedly filmed her and threatened to make it public if she tried to. Mr. Gupta said the police had deputed “well-trained” woman constables to speak to the woman.
