The Ludhua Cooperative Tea garden in South Tripura district has set a target of producing 1 lakh kg of green tea per year after its tea processing factory becomes operational, official sources said here on Tuesday.

Tripura Industries Minister, Jiten Chowdhury on Monday laid the foundation stone of a modern tea processing factory in the company’s garden on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said Rs 1.18 crore would be spent to set up the factory.

Sources said that the factory would start production of the green tea by the end of the next year after completion of the new factory.

The state’s Industries department has sanctioned Rs 60 lakh as loan for setting up the factory and rest of the amount would be taken as loan from banks.

Tripura has 68 tea gardens of which 13 are run by different cooperatives, 20 are under Tripura Tea Corporation and the rest 35 gardens are under private ownership.
