West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi was on Thursday sworn in as the Governor of Bihar. The term of the former Bihar Governor, D.Y. Patil, expired on Wednesday.
Chief Justice of Patna High Court Rekha Doshit administered oath to Mr. Tripathi, who will hold additional charge of Bihar.
Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, Speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary, Leaders of the Opposition in the Assembly and the Legislative Council Nand Kishore Yadav and Sushil Kumar Modi respectively and several ministers and senior officials were present.
Mr. Tripathi, 80, a constitutional expert, was born in Allahabad and practised as a lawyer in the High Court there from 1956 to 2014 barring the time when he was the Speaker of Uttar Pradesh three times — in 1991, 1997 and 2002. He told journalists that he would work for the welfare of the people. “I will advise and guide the government whenever required,” he said.
Asked how he would divide time between the two States, he said “it will not be a problem.” Mr. Tripathi praised Bihar’s rich tradition in education, particularly medical education, and said he would try to promote this.
