Trinamool Congress MP Ambica Banerjee died at a private hospital here on Thursday. He was 86.
Mr. Banerjee represented the Howrah Parliamentary constituency. He was a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 1982 to 2006.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled his death, saying it was an “irreparable loss” for the party. He had earned respect among all sections as a politician and social activist, she added.
Mr. Banerjee was hospitalised a few days ago and he died early in the morning, Minister for Agriculture Marketing Arup Roy said.
A mechanical engineer, Mr. Banerjee started his political career with the Congress. Later, he joined the Trinamool and contested the Lok Sabha polls from the Howrah seat in 2006 and 2009. He was also associated with various sports organisations like the Cricket Association of Bengal and the Indian Football Association.
His body was taken to the Assembly where several MLAs, including those of other parties, paid their respects. The body was also taken to a few sporting clubs with whom he was associated.
