Trinamool Congress MLA Shyamkumar Thounaojam escaped yet another bid on his life, when a very powerful bomb was removed from an Aganwadi centre at Andro in Imphal east district on Tuesday evening. He was scheduled to hold a meeting with the village elders inside the Aganwadi building regarding drinking water shortage in the village.

The angry MLA said that this is the third attempt on his life.

Police bomb experts said that had the bomb detonated, the building would have been demolished and persons present there would have been maimed to death.

Fire tenders were kept ready near the building at the time of defusing the bomb.

The MLA said that the last attempt on his life was while he was returning home from a function some weeks ago. Some persons in a car had ambushed him. When he and his bodyguards chased them the assailants allegedly rushed inside the army camp at Leimakhong.

He claimed the government denied permission to enter the army camp even after requesting the Home Minister Gaikhangam Gangmei over the telephone.

Girls, who were preparing tea, saw the bomb fitted inside the building and informed the police with villagers’help.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. There had been no claim for the two earlier attempts on his life. The MLA has been given armed paramilitary security.
