Tribals took out big rallies on Tuesday in the five tribal-dominated hill districts of Manipur demanding proper census and protection of the tribal areas.
The rallies were organised by the Committee on Protection of Tribal Areas, Manipur (COPTAM).
Though police had beefed up security to handle any eventuality, there were no reports of any untoward incident occurring during the rallies.
The tribals of Churachandpur district are unhappy with 29 villages being included in the valley district of Bishnupur ahead of the census.
Prohibitory orders
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr.PC have been clamped from Moirang in Bishnupur district to Kangvai in Churachandpur district with immediate effect. The order shall remain in force till August 22.
For quite sometime now, the two districts have been at loggerheads over demarcation of boundaries.
Journalists manhandled
Journalists, who had gone to cover some public meetings organised in this regard, were manhandled.
Reports said that signposts at the boundary were dismantled by some persons. In view of the tense situation, the authorities had not been able to reinstall them.
