Taking a step towards making Delhi’s second-longest metro line operational, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Wednesday started trial runs on a small stretch of the Janakpuri West – Botanical Garden (Noida) corridor.

“The initial trial runs on a 3.5km-stretch between Kalindi Kunj Depot and Okhla Vihar Metro station of Line 8 or Magenta Line (Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden) have started at a low speed,” a DMRC statement said.

“During these trials, the interface of the Metro train will be checked to ensure there is no physical infringement with civil infrastructure during the movement of the train and also testing of various subsystems of coaches shall be done,” the statement added.

The DMRC will, in stages, also check the new signalling technology, which is being implemented on this corridor for the first time.

“The Communication Based Train Control will also undergo rigorous testing,” a DMRC official said.

The response of the train at different speeds, braking of the train and the interconnection with the Operations Control Centre will also be monitored during the trials.

The behaviour of the track system and the Over Head Electrification will be checked repeatedly during the trial which, said an official, may go on for sometime.
