Transport Minister Satyendar Jain on Monday said efforts were afoot to bring all public services being offered by his department online with senior officials currently working on a detailed proposal.

Dubbed the Transport Department's “e-authority project”, Mr. Jain said that every service provided by the department – from the issuance of driving licenses, registration of vehicles, or permits — would go online in next five to six months.

“As part of the e-authority project, we will minimise the role of motor licensing offices in regular-affair dealings to ensure zero tolerance for corruption at the RTOs. Vehicle dealers will be authorised to register cars, bikes, scooters, trucks etc. and will not be required to seek the nod from the motor licensing officers,” Mr. Jain said at a press briefing.

The Transport Minister added that the Delhi government had planned to run over 1,000 feeder buses on the city’s narrow roads in a move to meet the shortage of public transport for last-mile connectivity.

Feeder buses

Mr. Jain said the government was contemplating running new feeder buses on the routes, which would be operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).

“We have studied that when low-floor buses, which are large in size, run on roads that are 60-feet or less wide, they occupy most of the space and lead to traffic issues. Keeping this in mind, we have chalked out a plan to run feeder buses on such roads,” Mr. Jain said.

The Minister added that there are several routes where DTC’s low-floor buses were running nearly empty except during morning and evening rush hours. Mr. Jain added that this was a loss of revenue, and the government plans to remedy it.

Compensation for family of Praveen Kumar

Meanwhile, Mr. Jain, who also holds the Public Works Department (PWD) portfolio, said the government intended to soon announce compensation to the family of a biker, who was mowed down by a tanker when he fell into a flooded pothole in Vasant Kunj last week.

The announcement came a day after he ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. “The government will soon announce a compensation to the family of Praveen Kumar,” the Minister said.
