Naveen Patnaik announces Rs. 10 lakh ex gratia for the victim’s kin

The sexual exploitation victim, on whom an attempt to murder was made by setting her ablaze in a school hostel in Rayagada district on October 24 night, succumbed to her injuries at a corporate hospital in Visakhapatnam on Friday.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed condolences to the family members of the victim. He declared an ex gratia payment of Rs. 10 lakh for next kin of the victim. The Chief Minister also ordered police to get the key accused in the case who had torched the woman, arrested within 24 hours. He also added that steps would be taken to get this case decided as early as possible through a fast track court.

When contacted Rayagada district Collector Sashi Bhusan Padhi, said they made contacts with the government to make the ex gratia payments delivered to the next of kin of the victim through the district administration of Puri.

It may be noted that the victim, who was serving as a contractual teacher at the Upper Primary School at Tikiri in Rayagada district hailed from Delanga area of Puri district.

According to hospital sources, the victim had suffered over 80 per cent burns. Her condition was critical and she had developed multi-organ failure was also brain dead. The State government had decided to bear entire cost of her treatment.

Meanwhile, Netrananda Dandasena (45), School Inspector, involved in the sexual exploitation and attempt to murder of this female teacher was arrested by a police team from Rayagada district from a place near Ichhapuram in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday. He has been sent to Rayagada sub-jail as his bail plea was rejected by Rayagada court on Thursday.

The 27-year-old contractual teacher had faced the lethal attack when she refused to withdraw the police complaint she had lodged against Dandasena who had allegedly subjected her to physical and mental harassment for two years.

Meanwhile, government has suspended Sub-Inspector Muralidhar Pradhan and District Inspector of Schools Dharanidhar Behera for not taking action based on the complaint received from the victim.

As per the statement given by the victim before her death, an unidentified youth who had been employed by Dandasena had torched her on October 24 night. The key accused is yet to be arrested.
