The Goa police on Friday disclosed that 39 of the 52 Nigerians presently in judicial custody did not have valid documents while 12 had Photostat copies of visas and only one had produced original documents.
The 52 Nigerians are in two main jails of the State for their involvement in the violent ruckus at Parra and later at Porvorim in north Goa on October 31, protesting against the murder of their compatriot.
The police, during their subsequent screening of documents of foreigners staying in Goa, have found that some Nigerians were illegally staying in Goa with forged visa documents in the name of Foreigners Regional Registration Office , Hyderabad.
Nigerian national Obinna Devid Okuma has been booked for cheating, as he had used the fake visa extension stamp from Hyderabad, and was residing at Assagao, in Bardez taluk. Another Nigerian national, who was arrested for assault of a local at Parra on the night of October 30, was later released by the Mapusa court on a conditional bail. When Anjuna police asked him to produce his documents on Friday, he failed to do so and was arrested.
Following the murder of a Nigerian on the night of October 30, a group of Nigerians blocked national highway 17 at Porvorim on October 31. Following a directive from Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, the police has begun a document verification drive all over the State for foreigners staying illegally.
