The chairman of The Assam Tribune Group of Newspapers, Tulsi Govinda Baruah, passed away at his Rajgarh residence on Saturday afternoon.
He was 87 and ailing for sometime. He leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter.
Born on July 29, 1925 in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh town, Mr. Baruah started assisting his illustrious father and first Mayor and architect of modern Guwahati R.G. Baruah in running The Assam Tribune , the premier English daily of the north-east at an early age in 1942. Later in 1985, he rose to the position of the chairman of the newspaper group which also publishes an Assamese daily Dainik Asam , a weekly Asam Bani and a monthly literary journal Gariyoshi .
Assam Governor J.B. Patnaik and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi led the State in mourning the demise of Mr. Baruah.
In his condolence message, Mr. Gogoi said Mr. Baruah’s contributions to the growth of journalism in the State would be remembered for generations to come. He also stated that inheriting a rich legacy from his illustrious father, Mr. Baruah took the Assam Tribune Group to new heights through his administrative acumen.
Mr. Baruah also acted in an Assamese film Smritir Parash and in a number of plays. He was actively associated with a number of socio-cultural organisations.
His death has cast a pall of gloom over the entire journalist fraternity of the region.
