Javed Nagori, arrested along with three others at Mehidpur in Ujjain, has been denied permission to sit for university examinations. On Saturday, Bhopal Chief Judicial Magistrate Pankaj Maheshwari rejected Nagori’s request.
On the night of December 31, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested the four men and seized a huge cache of explosives. The police claim that they are linked to the banned Students Islamic Movement of India.
Nagori is a private student, pursuing M.A. Economics at Vikram University, Ujjain. His second semester examinations are due to take place from March 19 to April 2 at Government College, Mehidpur. He appealed to be shifted to the Mehidpur prison, so that he could sit for the examinations under police watch.
The ATS submitted that the Mehdipur prison was not safe enough to hold an under-trial terrorist, and transporting him from the Ujjain prison was not feasible. Nagori’s lawyer Parvez Alam said the order violated the constitutional right to education and denied Nagori’s chance to get ahead in life when he had not even been convicted.
