The owner of a tea garden in North Bengal was lynched by an irate mob of workers on Saturday evening, following dispute over payments of wage arrears.

The incident happened within the garden at Malbazar in the State’s Jalpaiguri district some 50 km from Siliguri town. District Superintendent of Police Kunal Agawrwal confirmed the killing.

Available information suggested that the workers were agitated as their salaries were in arrears since October. They allegedly killed Rajesh Jhunjhunwala, the owner of the 400 acre Sonali Tea Garden after heated arguments.

There are some 700 workers employed in this garden which sells tea leaf directly as there is no factory.

This is the second such incident since the North Brook incident in May when the Chief Executive Officer (Operations) of the jute mill in the State’s Hooghly district near here, was killed by a mob of violent workers after talks of production cutbacks.
