The Samajwadi Party was in talks with leaders of Left parties for a possible third front alliance, party president Mulayam Singh Yadav said at a function here on Tuesday.

Mr. Yadav said he recently met CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat and had discussions with him, but declined to give details.

“We want to form alliances to thwart communal parties from coming to power at the Centre,” he said.

The occasion was the screening of film Sarathi on him made by Shankar Suhel.

Rajya Sabha MP Kiranmoy Nanda organised the event.

Earlier, Mr. Yadav said the possibility of post-poll alliance with like-minded parties was more like it, than pre-poll partnerships.
