“Open-minded reasoning” and “celebration of human freedom” were the two crucial notions that influenced Rabindranath Tagore that led to his embracing “humanism and universalism as opposed to chauvinism and regionalism,” Swedish Ambassador Harald Sandberg said here on Friday.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the Nobel Memorial Wall, a permanent structure set up in the city’s Esplanade Metro Railway station, where portraits of the seven Nobel Laureates from India, including Rabindranath Tagore, are displayed.
The event commemorated the centenary of Tagore receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature. Apart from the portraits of Nobel Laureates, information on their life and achievements in their respective fields and the year in which they were awarded the Nobel are also displayed on the wall in English, Hindi and Bengali. Similar memorial walls will also be set up temporarily in two other Metro Railway stations — Gitanjali and Jorasanko.
