Tensions prevailed at Jamuria in Bardhaman district of West Bengal on Wednesday as Union Minister of State for Urban Development Babul Supriyo defied prohibitory orders and visited the family of a minor girl who had died.

Mr. Supriyo, Asansol MP and Bharatiya Janata Party leader, said the police stopped him from visiting Jamuria in his constituency. “The WB police, which is no less than Trinamool Congress cadre, have now stooped to the level of stopping an MP and a Central Minister from meeting his people,” the Minister tweeted.

He said that Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner told him that his visit might lead to communal tensions. “How can the Police Commissioner predict communal tensions,” the Minister asked.

When his vehicle was stopped, Mr. Supriyo tried to enter using a motorcycle and later walked to reach the house of the girl.

“When Babul Supriyo tried to enter Jamuria, his car was stopped by the police. Later on our party supporters and I personally came to the area and we walked to the girl’s house. We demand immediate police action and arrest of the culprits,” said Dilip Ghosh, president of the BJP State unit.

Asked if the police will take any action against the Minister, Siddhinath Gupta, Commissioner of Police, Asansol-Durgapur, told The Hindu that the law would take its own course
