The condition of actor Suchitra Sen suffered a major setback on Saturday as she developed a breathing problem, sending her physicians into a tizzy. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rushed to the private hospital where Ms. Sen is being treated since last month.

Subrata Maitra, lead physician attending on Ms. Sen, said: “There was a temporary emergency this afternoon ... but she is better now. She was having difficulty breathing. She has been put on non-invasive ventilation and is now under sedation.” A very senior physician of the city was also consulted during the day.

Ms. Banerjee, who has visited the hospital five times since the octogenarian actor’s admission, said that Ms. Sen had fans all over the world and they were anxious to hear about her well-being. Therefore nothing insensitive should be said or written about her. Earlier, Dr. Moitra said the legendary actor’s condition had been fluctuating as the oxygen level in her blood had not returned to normal. She had no definitive infection and had been put under antibiotic cover.

She was admitted to the hospital with chest infection and fever.
