Sub-jail superintendent held for taking bribe

Superintendent of Digapahandi sub-jail in Ganjam district of Odisha, Bibhuti Bhusan Patnaik, was arrested by vigilance officials on Tuesday while he was accepting Rs.10,000 from a supplier of grocery items to the jail.

This Shankarsana Khuntia had approached the Berhampur vigilance division when the sub-jail superintendent demanded bribe to pass his pending bills for goods supplied and to influence chairman of the tender committee of the jail to issue necessary instructions so that the supplier could supply dal.

Khuntia has been supplying grocery items to the sub-jail since 2009. This year also he had participated in the tender process and received orders to supply 95 items, excluding dal. When the complainant approached Patnaik, he allegedly demanded Rs.10,000.

Basing on the complaint of Khuntia, vigilance sleuths set up a trap on Tuesday. Patnaik was caught while accepting the currency notes marked with phenolphthalein at his residence.
