More than 250 students at an Urdu medium school in a western suburb of the city took ill after being served the midday meal snack on Monday. Most of the children were taken to hospitals near the school and many were discharged after preliminary treatment.

The incident occurred at the Anjuman Nurul Islam High School in Saki Naka. After having a piece of mango cake during their recess at 10 a.m., many complained of stomach ache and started vomiting.

According to the principal, N.M. Malik, the snack was given to 654 students. The school works in two shifts: morning for secondary students and afternoon for primary students. “We only serve dry meals. It is for students from class 5 to 8. I tasted the cake before distributing it. Within half an hour, teachers started complaining that students were vomiting. I alerted the management immediately and they were rushed to hospitals. All of them are recuperating,” he said. After the incident, the school gave the day off to primary school students.

Mohankumar Dahikar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 10, said that they would lodge a complaint against the bakery which supplied the cake. “We will take action after we get the test report of the quality of the cake.”
