General secretary of Trinamool’s student wing is one of the accused
A first-year college student was gang-raped, allegedly by four persons, including the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress’ student wing of the college, in Bardhaman district of West Bengal earlier this week.
The victim has alleged that she felt dizzy after being offered a drink inside the college premises. She was taken to a room and gang-raped, allegedly by four persons, police officials told The Hindu on Friday.
In the police complaint filed on Thursday, the victim said though her memory was foggy she faintly remembered that she was molested by a group of men who also recorded a video clip of the act.
“A case of gang-rape has been registered. One person has been detained in connection with this case. The medical examination of the victim was conducted during the day,” Ajay Kumar Nand, Commissioner of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commisionerate, said over the telephone.
A search was on for the other three accused. The detained person would be medically examined, he said.
The police said that after the incident, two of the four accused dropped the victim home. She was barely conscious and had to be rushed to a local hospital where she eventually recovered.
The victim has said that two of the accused – students of the same college – are known to her.
Asked whether the accused were activists of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad, student wing of the party, Mr. Nand said the police were conducting a probe.
The incident comes within a month of a gang-rape in the same district.
A 38-year-old woman alleged that she was gang-raped in Durgapur by a group of 10 to 15 persons.
