‘Malegaon probe was intended to defame Hindutva groups'

Terming Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh's statements on slain Anti-Terrorism Squad officer Hemant Karkare as “serious and equally silly”, the Shiv Sena on Saturday demanded a detailed inquiry into the matter and said that Mr. Singh be deemed an accused in the 26/11 case.

“If it is true, why did he [Mr. Singh] hide this conversation for two years? What else did they talk about? All this is a matter for investigation and it won't be complete till Mr. Singh is made accused in the 26/11 case. This statement is not just condemnable; it warrants a detailed probe,” Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said in a statement issued here on Saturday.

He said that the allegation that the Malegaon blast probe had been carried out to defame Hindutva organisations was proven beyond doubt after Mr. Singh's disclosure.

“The Malegaon probe was meant to label Hindus as terrorists and senior Congress leaders were controlling the ATS. This accusation has been supported by Mr. Singh's statement,” he stated.

“We need to know what relations there were between Mr. Karkare and senior Congress leaders. If Mr. Karkare felt threatened, why didn't he talk to the State's Chief Minister or the Home Minister? Why talk to Mr. Singh?” he questioned.

“Barrister A.R. Antulay [senior Congress leader] had asked who had called Mr. Karkare before he was shot at? Was it the Congress leaders who had called him?” he said.
